Embracing Ancestral Waterways
Welcome to Tribal Sacred Waters, Inc. As Native Americans, we are deeply connected to the ocean. We offer educational programs that honor our heritage and promote a deeper understanding of marine environments. Join us on this journey of learning and respect.
Our mission
At Tribal Sacred Waters, Inc., our mission is to educate and inspire a connection with the ocean through culturally relevant programs rooted in Native American traditions. We aim to foster environmental stewardship and a deeper appreciation for our sacred waters.
As tribal nations, we assert our rightful connection to the ocean and seek to reclaim the privileges that come with it. We are inherently united with the ocean, underscoring the necessity for greater education and understanding of its significance—an understanding that has been integral to our culture since time immemorial.
Our programs
We offer a variety of educational programs designed to connect individuals with the ocean while honoring Native American Tribal traditions. Our programs include guided tours, workshops, and cultural immersion experiences, all focused on fostering a deeper understanding and respect for marine environments.
Coastal exploration
Tribal Sacred Waters, Inc. provides hands-on coastal exploration experiences that connect participants to California’s diverse marine ecosystems. Activities include tide pooling, shoreline observation, and learning about coastal habitats, marine wildlife, biodiversity, and ecological relationships. Participants gain an understanding of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), ocean conservation, responsible recreation, and the importance of protecting coastal resources for future generations. Through direct experiences, community members develop a deeper respect for the ocean and the interconnectedness of all living systems.
Cultural immersion
Our cultural immersion programs honor the Indigenous peoples of California and their enduring relationship with the ocean. Participants learn about traditional ecological knowledge, California tribal history, coastal lifeways, fisheries, maritime traditions, and the cultural significance of marine resources. We share stories, language, cultural practices, and stewardship values that have been passed down through generations, strengthening connections between youth, elders, and ancestral coastal homelands.
Restoration projects
Tribal Sacred Waters, Inc. actively participates in restoration and conservation efforts that support healthy coastal ecosystems. We collaborate with regional partners on plastic pollution reduction initiatives, watershed protection, and environmental stewardship projects, including participation in the Tijuana River restoration and pollution mitigation efforts. Our work emphasizes marine conservation, habitat restoration, biodiversity protection, and community engagement. We educate participants about the importance of clean waterways, healthy oceans, and Marine Protected Areas, while encouraging active stewardship and environmental responsibility.
Culinary Wellness Education
Through culinary wellness and sustainable fisheries education, participants learn about traditional and contemporary seafood harvesting practices, responsible catch-and-release methods, seafood preparation, nutrition, and food sovereignty. Tribal Sacred Waters participates in regional seafood initiatives and gatherings, including discussions on seafood as a catalyst for community health, economic development, and stewardship. We also educate communities about climate resiliency and the impacts of climate change on ocean ecosystems, including warming waters, sea-level rise, habitat shifts, ocean acidification, extreme weather events, and changing marine species distributions. By understanding these challenges, participants are empowered to support adaptation strategies, conservation efforts, and resilient coastal communities for future generations.
Tribal Sacred Waters, Inc
Logo meaning- Tribal Sacred Waters, Inc. embodies the unity of our ancestors and bridges our past, present, and future as original stewards of the coast and ocean. It reflects our commitment to honoring the wisdom of those who came before us while giving back to future Tribal generations.
The fish within the logo represents our vital connection to the ocean, which has long sustained our people as an essential part of our traditional diet and way of life. Over time, that connection has been disrupted, and this symbol reflects our commitment to restoring our fishing rights and reclaiming our relationship with the ocean. The boat represents our historical ability to fish, travel, gather, and care for our waters, reminding us of our responsibilities as caretakers of the coast and sea.
Sage, known for its purifying and sacred qualities, reflects our commitment to protecting the spiritual integrity of our practices. The color red represents sacredness, strength, and cultural identity. The abalone shell carries deep cultural significance, honoring its use in traditional jewelry, ceremony, and trade.
Kelp represents Indigenous conservation, renewal, and the growth of marine life. It reminds us of the balance between our communities and the ocean ecosystems we have cared for since time immemorial.
Ultimately, this logo symbolizes the spirit of Tribal waters, the unity of Native communities along California’s southern coast, and the continued presence of Indigenous peoples on our unceded homelands. It honors the truth that we have always been here, despite being pushed away from the ocean, and affirms our ongoing responsibility to protect, restore, and reclaim our sacred relationship with the waters.
